His Grace Mar Afram Athniel, Chairman of ACERO and Bishop of Syria has described the situation in his country as a ‘humanitarian crisis’ of catastrophic proportions. The overwhelming majority of Assyrians in Syria are concentrated in the Governorate of al-Hasakah in north-eastern Syria and in the villages which are found along the Khabur River.
Unfortunately tens of thousands of Assyrians have fled Syria as a result of the dire civil war currently engulfing the country. ACERO is working actively in Syria in the provision of food and medical relief. The security situation however constrains ACERO’s ability to communicate with its project partners and committees in the country. Nevertheless, the overwhelming majority of ACERO’s efforts are currently being concentrated on Syria and the suffering Christians living in the war-zone.
